Methodology

How Cheerio Checks In works.

Trust is our main asset. Here is exactly how we review, rate, verify, and disclose.

What Cheerio Checks In Reviews

We review luxury and upscale hotels, restaurants, patios, and destinations through one lens: the genuine comfort, logistics, safety, service, and emotional welcome experienced by a small dog and their human.

Pet-Friendly vs. Truly Dog-Welcoming

Allowed is policy. Welcomed is experience.

Dog-Allowed means dogs are technically permitted. Pet-Tolerant means dogs are allowed but with friction or restrictions. Dog-Welcoming means a comfortable, practical, warm experience. Exceptional means a best-in-class luxury small-dog experience worth planning around.

The Cheerio Paw Rating System

Hotels are scored from one to four Cheerio Paws. Four is rare and always earned.

Pet-Tolerant Only

Dogs are permitted, but the experience is limited, inconvenient, or not worth planning a luxury small-dog trip around.

Dog-Friendly With Caveats

It can work for experienced small-dog travelers, but there are meaningful restrictions, friction points, or planning considerations.

Truly Dog-Welcoming

A strong luxury stay where small dogs are treated with warmth, comfort, and practical support.

Worth Planning Around

Exceptional. Best-in-class for small dogs and their humans. Rare, memorable, and destination-worthy.

The Cheerio Patio Rating

Restaurants and patios use a related but narrower one-to-four paw scale.

1 Paw

Dog allowed, but awkward, cramped, or not worth planning around.

2 Paws

Works with caveats; acceptable for experienced small-dog owners.

3 Paws

Genuinely small-dog friendly, comfortable, and polished.

4 Paws

Exceptional patio or dining experience; worth planning into the itinerary.

Badge Definitions

  • Verified Stay: Cheerio personally stayed there, or the brand has first-hand stay evidence.
  • Policy Verified: The official policy has been confirmed recently.
  • Reader Report: Information came from a reader and is not necessarily independently verified.
  • Pet-Tolerant Only: A cautionary badge — dogs are allowed but the experience creates friction.
  • Worth Planning Around: Rare, and reserved for exceptional experiences.
  • 5 lb Approved: Especially suited to very small dogs.

What Counts as Verified

A Verified Stay reflects first-hand evidence. Policy Verified means an official policy was recently confirmed. Where we have not yet verified, we say so — “To be verified,” “Rating pending,” or “On the inspection list.”

Reader Reports vs. Official Reviews

Reader reports are valuable and help us prioritize what to inspect next, but they are not equivalent to verified stays and do not automatically determine Cheerio Paw ratings.

Disclosure and Independence

Reviews are independent. Ratings cannot be bought. Partnerships never guarantee positive coverage. Official policies may change and should be re-confirmed before booking.
